Poetry (English)

American poetry arose first as colonists added their voices to English poetry in the 17th century. By the 19th century, a distinctive American idiom began to emerge. In that strain, Walt Whitman was winning an audience abroad, and poets from the United States began to take their place at the forefront of the English-language avant-garde. The collection presents well-known American poets from Emily Dickinson to Maya Angelou. These books tie in well with book and conversation clubs, as well as speaker programs on literary themes.
